Life Lately According To My iPhone

I know we're almost to the middle of March,
{or Middlemarch for you George Eliot fans}
but I thought I'd share with you
a quick glimpse of what's been happening in my life
according to the photos on my phone...
here we go.

Matt McGill's Potential Book Titles

Luke spoke in HSM

and Caleb was stoked on his nachos

I visited milk&honey for the first time
and had a really tasty iced latte

Saw Metropolis II {and fell in love}

And some more art at LACMA

Wished for this kid to fall in the water

Took a quick tour past the LaBrea Tarpits

Dared a student to eat a tangerine
without using his hands

Competed in a Staff Volleyball Tournament
{and scored four points in one game}

Saw {and sang along to} a High School production of
Beauty and the Beast

Helped lead an event called BE.
A night to BE connected with God.

Cheered on some of my favorite kids at
the elementary school talent show

FaceTimed with my dad

Bre practiced being a Kenyan woman

Elijah tried on some glasses while we
ate dinner with my Grandpa

I celebrated the Sabbath during Lent

Life has been full lately...
and very fun lately...
some really great changes ahead, too
{more on that soon!}

I'll Be There For You...

This is my friend Katie.
picture circa 1995(ish)
surprisingly, neither of us are wearing overalls
{we wore overalls a l o t}

We met when I was a homesick elementary schooler
who was so homesick, I was puking in the camp bathroom...
Katie came in, found me and comforted me.

She was my small group leader in Junior High
and later became my coworker
and all along has been one of my very best friends.

We've been friends for almost 20 years!
{We're planning a 20-year vacation, of course}

We've been to dozens of camps,
on vacation to New York and Florida
attended conferences in Ohio, Illinois, Georgia, and Indiana
traveled to Kenya together several times
{our first trip was together and came to visit when I lived there}
sang along to hundreds of songs in the car,
and have written thousands of letters to one another...

here's one of the first:

It's crazy to think about how her involvement in my life has affected who I am.
I'm incredibly grateful for her.

Take a minute and write a note to someone who has impacted your life.
You'll be glad you did...and so will he/she.

I Love Bill Cosby

I totally love Bill Cosby.
Like, big time.
Also noted here and here.

I did a little Google Image Search tonight
and would you take a look at what I found?

Seriously. Coz, let's be friends.
But current-me and 1978-you.
Deal?

Who is your biggest
{and most ridiculous}
celebrity crush?

Devote Daily

A few friends and I have been working on a project for the last few months.
It's an online daily devotional.

It's called Devote Daily.
and it launched on Monday.

It's written with high school students in mind,
but I thought I'd share it with you, too...

Take a minute, click on the link above
and read our first few posts

I'd love to hear what you think...

Unearthed. This World Through The Lens Of The Next

My church {Mariners Church}
just finished a series on worship
which I thought was fantastic.

Here are the links to videos of each
of the three messages:

If you do take the time to watch any or all of them,
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Put On A Happy Face

I prefer to put on my make-up

sitting on the floor

with natural lighting

using a eyeshadow palette mirror.

I hold the mirror in my left hand,
brush/pencil in my right

with all the pieces laying on the floor in front of me.

The other morning, I realized
this might not be a common place to "put on your face"
but it's become such a routine for me.

Where do you put on your make-up?

Cold Dark Matter...And Engine Oil

To continue the discussion we began yesterday,
I thought I would tell you a bit about the best art installation I've ever seen.

by Cornelia Parker

Parker filled a shed with objects she had collected
from friends' sheds and neighborhood sales

She then blew-up the shed,
collected the pieces
and attempted to recreate the moment after the explosion.

Here's the installation:

Parker's piece is, easily,
my favorite installation of all.

Second, would be Metropolis II
{which is currently on display at LACMA}

A room custom-built for the installation,
it is filled with oil and has the illusion of well-polished, mirroring floors.
Visitors are able to stand in the middle of the dark sea via a narrowing walkway.
{The only permanent installation at The Saatchi Gallery}

I really love art.
More about art tomorrow, I'm sure.

There's A Superman Joke In Here Somewhere

I spent the my Monday at LACMA
with my friend Sara.

I saw several really great pieces
by a lot of really great artists.

But the best of all was this:
created by Chris Burden
the same artist who designed Urban Lights:

I had to fight back tears when I saw Metropolis II.

We spent almost an hour walking through the display
taking dozens of photos
watching as the cars and trains began to move

then we walked through another exhibition
{which I'll tell you about another day}
but, before we left, we visited Metropolis II again.

Oh man, I love it.
I want to recreate it in my own home...
so I can watch it all the time.

A Cluttered Home Is A Cluttered Mind

That's it, friends.
As of yesterday, I am no longer the renter of a storage unit.

Seriously...I'm so proud of myself that I don't even need your words of affirmation.
Though, I will happily accept them.

Monday brought two packed carloads of boxes to my home.

And some new treasures for Sara B
and Jon McB
who only wore this bracelet through staff meeting,
but that was enough for me

On Tuesday evening {Valentine's Day}
I prepared my room for the new furniture
by moving everything in to the living room.

And, thus, began our week of living in the TV show Hoarders.

Moving boxes to get the front door open.
Moving boxes to get a blanket out of the cabinet.

Pushing the recliner forward so I could step around the boxes
and move the frames to get in to other boxes in the closet.

Photographic proof of the chaos:

I've come to realize how much a cluttered house gives me a cluttered brain.
It has been difficult for me to focus on other things
knowing that this is what my home looks like.

The idea of coming home from work to this mess...
it's similar to the thought of coming from a crazy day at work
and then heading out to Disneyland.

Wednesday morning, the movers dropped off the pieces.
Closing my storage unit of four years.
And beginning the "find 15 minutes" project at home.

Find 15 minutes...
and give "a place" to as many items as possible.

First: the living room
Our typewriter displayed under Glory.

My bookshelf...
slowly being filled
{since there should be an order to the shelving of books}

And my wonderful old craft table.
How I've missed the organization it provides!

I told my roommate that I would like to be back to normal by Saturday evening.
That means I need to find a lot of 15 minutes intervals in the next few days.

I can't wait to see how much clearer my brain feels next week!
