Camp, Camp, Summer Camp

I received a text yesterday morning from my Grandpa:

No blog today? How could you disappoint me like that?

I forgot to let you know that I would be at camp this week...sorry!

I think most of the people who read my blog are/were up here with me...but maybe there are a few of you who miss it...

A ton of fun stories so far...including an interesting happening at the skate park...

More soon...but possibly not until Friday.

Amy Winehouse

I heard this song on the radio the other night...and I really liked it.
Then I was having a meeting with Kurt and the same song came on his iPod.

I went home and searched the iTunes top 100 downloads and found it: "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse. I really like the sound of the album; it feels like old bluesy-jazz/pop. (I'm sure that combination offends many bluesy-jazz fans...)

I bought the "clean" version on iTunes...and have been singing it since Thursday...

If you don't already have it, check it out!

School Supplies

Tonight I went shopping at Target...I was by myself, so I took my time...I wandered up and down the aisles looking at everything...

When I got to the school supplies, I stopped to smell a folder.

I love the smell of fresh binders; don't they smell like comfort?

Do you remember the days of buying a fresh new binder, pencil pouch (which I never actually used), eraser/pencil combination...I would go home and organize everything so it would be just right for my first day. Lined paper, dividers, highlighters...

In those days there were no other thoughts...everything revolved around school starting...who would be my teachers? my friends? would I be well-liked? picked last? would I embarrass myself by not knowing that Nine Inch Nails was a new band? (that last one really happened)

That was it. I miss those days...Most people say they would never go back, but I would...in a heartbeat. I loved school...I loved learning and laughing and hanging out during snack. I loved the small responsibilities and the knowledge that my parents would never let any harm come to me (which I know is still true, but is less obvious now)

As all of these thoughts rushed around in my head, I realized that I was standing in Target, sniffing a binder...the mom with her two backpack-choosing kids was staring at me.

I put the binder back on the shelf and walked away thinking about my third grade class.

Fool Me Once...Fool Me Twice

Two days ago, I stopped by my Starbucks and it was closed for a remodel...
I don't remember seeing any posted warnings or notices.
But, you know, no big deal...

Yesterday, I stopped there again. Yep, still closed.

Apparently, I'm that stupid.

I switched from Google to Blackle...not only is it saving watts, but it also is totally sweet-looking...

Make the switch!

If I Had to be A...

Kurt tagged me on his "made-up tag thingy"...so, I'm playing along.

"IF YOU HAD TO BE A _____________ (who would you be and why)"

1. FAMOUS PERSON FROM HISTORY: Jackie Kennedy Onassis. She's gorgeous--the epitome of style and class. She's considered to be a fashion icon...and, in her later years, was a successful book editor. (How could I not aspire to be those two things?)

2. CELEBRITY: I would be Gwyneth Paltrow. She seems very put-together: no history of drug-use, very classy (in her wardrobe, in her movie choices, in her lifestyle), seemingly a good mother who has her priorities straight (family first...) not to mention, she's beautiful and can pull-off a killer fake British accent...oh, and she's married to a British guy (who doesn't want that?!)

3. ATHLETE: Dominique Dawes. I would love to be an Olympic Gymnast...

4. FAMOUS MUSICIAN: I would be Sheryl Crow. I know she has some sketchy decision-making skills (Kid Rock, Lance Armstrong, someone once mentioned a copyright-ordeal from Tuesday Night Music Sessions)...but, honestly, she can write pretty good songs, she can sing and play the guitar, the bass, the piano (and the tambourine, but I'm assuming that's not too hard if you have enough rhythm to play the bass). She's 40+ and still surfs and is beautiful...and she beat cancer, for crying out loud.

5. CHRISTIAN MOVER AND SHAKER: To be honest, this is the most difficult for me to answer. I am well-versed in the worlds of celebrity and fashion...I had to Google "Female Olympic Gymnasts" to find my answer for #3...but this one seems un-searchable. I guess I'll have to go with Rob Bell (I slightly hate myself for this answer), but I really do think he is changing things up. I have a small dislike for Nooma (not out of disbelief in the brilliance of it--mostly because it just seems to be something that everyone loves and I don't just want to be a band-wagoner...I want to form my own opinion). Mr. Bell has made a shift in the "curriculum" feel (at least from what I'm accustomed to) and made it in such a way that it is now attractive to Junior Highers, High Schoolers, College age, young adults, and even octogenarians.

Okay...I tag: Bella Sarti, Wes, My mom, and Amanda Maguire.

COWabunga...at the Fair

I had two desires for the Orange County Fair this year:
1) Eat a ton of junk food
2) Ride the Ferris Wheel

I met both of these goals tonight...

We ate so many different foods (Jaime took pictures of everything...I only have a few)...this is most of it (I might be missing something):

Deep Fried:
Oreos, avocados, cheesecake, Coke, peanut butter/banana/honey, artichoke, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, tomatoes

Not Fried: turkey leg, corn on the cob, sausages, jelly-donut/chicken sandwich, chocolate-covered banana, apple crisp, Oreo shake, Australian potato cakes

Magnetic Poetry

We were never allowed to have magnets on our refrigerator at my house...
When we moved in to the house we live in now, my dad bought a new refrigerator with a non-magnetic front.

So, now that I have my own refrigerator, I have tons of magnets: ugly magnets from all over the world.

I also have a box of magnetic poetry.

The entire right side of my fridge has small words all over it...tiny white boxes waiting to be rearranged to make people smile or laugh...

Allison and I spent an hour or so last night arranging these words...

Here are my three favorites:

My Day in Pictures

This Photo Makes Me Laugh

You're welcome.

There's a First Time for Everything

Allison spent the night at my house last night, as she was leaving for work this morning, she went in to the pantry for some cereal. She actually said, "I've never had cocoa puffs before"...

So, to commemorate this occasion, here is a photo of her big day:

Congratulations, Allison! Glad you are happy with your decision.

Harry Potter 7

Just stopped on my way to work to pick up my copy...oh, and my free poster.

The sad part is that buying book doesn't make me feel nerdy...

What makes me feel nerdy is the fact that I want to be a shut-in for the next week while I read it...

So, see you in August!

My Mom Totally Loves Me

Check out this post my mom wrote tonight...
She's my biggest fan and one of my best friends.

Hey! It's My Fan!

I had a really fun experience at the Student Leadership Conference...I was waiting for this picture so I could tell about it properly...but her post (see link below) tells the story much better than I could!

This is Jessica...She's my blog fan...This is the email I got from her today...

Hi Allison!

It's me--your blog fan AKA Jessica :)

This is the post she wrote about me on her blog!

Jessica, if you are reading this...I am so glad that you came up to me at the conference! I love that I have a fan...Griff always rubs it in that he's known for his blog! I LOVED getting this email today...and just read your post aloud to my friends at the office! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

That's a Great Story Grandpa

When someone begins to tell you a story that they've told you before, do you stop them or let them continue on? Is your response dependant on the teller? If you love someone (like you are old and have been married to them for 80 years) will you always re-listen?

If you stop them, how do you phrase that? "I know, you've told me" or "Yeah, I've heard this before"?

If you let them continue...how many times will you listen to this story before you begin to stop them?

I am a re-teller. I know I am. But I'm also a re-listener...

Seriously, do you stop the story-teller or let them continue?

Friday Morning Google Search

How cool is it that in a matter of seconds you can find a mariachi band within driving distance from your house?

Yet another thing that I love about my job...the apparent need for a mariachi band.

Blogless in Santa Margarita

I am well aware of the fact that I have criticized others for lack of posts...and so, for my own absence, I apologize.

I have had a lot on my mind in the last few days...I haven't been able to shake this feeling of mental chaos...not in the "cuckoo's nest" way, but more so in the "how are there so many un-fixable scenarios in my life at once" way.

None of these "un-fixable situations" are life threatening...they just all seem to be happening at once...and that makes my thoughts a little heavier. They are not even "world hunger" un-fixable...most of them are actually tackle-able by others, I would just be unable to do anything on my own...

On a lighter note, I have been entertaining at my new place (which is coming along very well)...it's mostly the same few people on repeat, but I really do feel there is nothing more comforting than easy friendships.

I'm hoping to snap out of this soon...I hate not having anything to write about...

My Place...As of Yesterday

So, things have been a little crazy in the last few days...moving and working and trying to relax and appreciate having a few days off.
Also, every time I went to blog, pieces were missing...computer at the new house, camera cord at the old...blah, blah, blah...

Here are some photos...but things are so different even from these...I'll take some more tomorrow...and you can see it for reals...

Since then: bed, couch, chair, more movies, clothes, pots, pans, glasses, etc...
More tomorrow!

Spice World

I have five JH girls at my house right now...we walked to the grocery store (and I made them help carry all of my groceries home)...then we ate Cocoa Puffs and played celebrity.

Now? Well, the girls went through my DVD collection and chose Spice World...

The saddest part is not that I own this DVD...or even that I was excited to watch it...The saddest part is that I know every word.

Between my love for Harry Potter and Spice Girls, it's a wonder I wasn't part of the AV club in High School--oh wait, I was in show choir...that's probably the same.

My favorite line from the movie: The girls say "Oh, the toilet is stopped up again...and Meatloaf (who plays their tour bus driver) says "I would do anything for those girls...but I won't do that."

SLC Videos

I don't typically post videos, but I was so excited about using the wireless internet in my new house that I couldn't wait until I actually had something to say...

Here's the Kung-Fu Rap Video:

BeeHarmony:

New House: Day 1

So...today I started moving in! Amanda and Rachel stopped by this morning to check it out and each offered some really great "moving in" suggestions...

I couldn't really figure out where to begin...I was trying so hard to think of what I would need to live and all I could think of was food.

So, we went to Target. The dollar section had serving utensils, so I bought a bunch of those...they also had a giant measuring cup, so I bought that too.

I felt like, to be working in a house for the next week, there would need to be some food. Here's what is now in my cupboards: lime tortilla chips, honey bunches of oats with almonds, chocolate milk mix, single-serving cheeses, Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper and milk. Really, who wouldn't want to party at my house?

Zack took the doors off of my cupboards while I (growing increasingly frustrated) contact papered--really, someone with a college degree should be able to work a roll of contact paper.

My mom bought me a giant basket of house supplies, so I put all of that away...ran a load in the dishwasher with all of the dishes that were in the house: my new serving utensils, measuring cup, four Rubbermaid containers, and six wine glasses that my mom inherited from my grandparents.

It was so nice to have everything cleaned up and feeling on its way to being a home...I still have three more days off work to keep moving!

We finished the night at the new house laying in the middle of my empty living room watching The O.C. on DVD, eating pizza and drinking soda out of my newly-washed wine glasses.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow as it comes together even more!

Here's the plan: dishes, some clothing, towels, picture frames, books, refrigerator magnets, wireless Internet, cable and TV, a phone...

What Kind Of Ship Never Sinks?

I've been thinking. If I were to get married right now, I would have a huge wedding party. In my entire life I've had, maybe, 3 or 4 really good friends at one time...right now I have about 12.

I love how quickly a friendship can develop...how quickly you can be connected to someone.

The best part of this is how eclectic my collection of bridesmaids would be: they range from 13 to 40-ish, and have known me anywhere from six months to 15-years.

Note: I feel the need to state that I am, in no way, feeling as though I will be married soon...but, seeing as I am a girl, I can't help but think about these sorts of things.

(A note on the note: I wrote that entire paragraph while hearing it said in a British accent in my head...try it...it works!)

Who would be in your wedding?

HP 5

I wanted to write this post last night, but wasn't sure how to make myself sound cool instead of as nerdy as I actually am. This morning I decided there was no escaping it.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was amazing. I felt bad for the people sitting on either side of me because I kept saying "It's so good!" through the movie.

I knew, heading in, that it was going to be great...but sometimes movies can be a let-down when they are built up too much in your head.

The best pieces:
* The Black House
* The Thestrals (so brilliant!)
* The Ministry of Mystery
* Harry's flashback scenes

Honestly, I could write a book about how much I love Harry Potter...sad, I know.

The story lines are so captivating...There are so many round characters (not just Harry, Ron and Hermione)...

I talked Harry Potter all the way home (sorry Blakeneys!)...

Have you seen it? What did you think?
I can't wait to see it again!

I Smell Like a Dude...

I used the end of my liquid soap yesterday morning...so, last night I ran to Target to buy some.

Now, I have an adventurous side...and it showed its face in the soap aisle.

I bought a soap that I have never before used...an Old Spice soap that smelled really clean.

Other soaps smell delicious while they are being used, but don't necessarily leave you smelling delicious all day...

This soap, oh, this soap...I totally smell like Old Spice right now...

My shampoo and conditioner are no mask--my perfume can not over-power...

I totally smell like a boy...
Not that it's a bad thing...but it's just a very strong scent.

I'm Exhausted...

When I'm exhausted I want to...

* cuddle
* watch a movie that I've seen a million times
* be with comfortable friends
* drink chocolate milk
* be misty-eyed
* be complimented
* get dressed up and feel fancy, not tired
* sleep
* eat something really fattening that I would never typically eat

What do you love to do when you're tired?

SLC Day 2:Three sessions, two workshops and a Be-harmony

This morning, Griff turned "who will play this game" in to "which of these boys would that partner-less girl care to marry?" Micah won...He won a sweet date...Hopefully there will be video evidence.

Students had the opportunity to attend two (of two dozen) workshops this afternoon. I briefly heard Allison Murray, Chip, Elizabeth and a few others. I sat through Phil Shinners' (who is one of my favorite people ever).

I had lunch with the Maguires (also some of my favorites)...

Here is the only picture of the actual sessions...but here's a quick recap: Taco Bell Olympics (taquito javelin, crunch wrap discus, cinnamon twist shotput, Mountain Dew chug), Street Smarts: Youth Leader Edition, Jeff Maguire, Kay Warren, Matt McGill, a video-testimony of "passing the baton" of leadership through fellowship...great day!

Tomorrow morning is the debut of the newest rap video...the video that gave me this:
