Writing Like a Writer

I bought a book with the tag line "Reading Like a Writer".

Reading brings about an improvement in vocabulary. How does one use said vocabulary without sounding pretentious?

You can't. My rule: Never use a fancy word when a simple one would suffice, I mean, do.
